| SPOOL CABINET GALLERY & HISTORY, PART 2 by Debbie McArdle
This is a tall circa 1890 Corticelli spool cabinet with
its original clock and beveled mirror. The clock works
and comes with its key. There is also another key to
lock the mirrored door.
This is one of the more unusual
cabinets we have ever owned, possibly made in a more
limited number. We have seen variations of this style on
the market with the clock removed and replaced by a
round mirror. This cabinet has been refinished and
has authentic replaced lettering on each side.
To the right is an original circa 1890 George A. Clark O.N.T. 6-drawer ruby glass spool cabinet, refinished, with all the original parts. Many cabinets offered for sale have new glass and even "fantasy" names! Note all the hardware / handles have their original backplate embossed with the initials "O.N.T." which is Clark's logo for "Our Newest Thread". Many times we find cabinets with "married" hardware, incorrect for the case. The hardware and glass on this case is correct, and, as we said, original to it. Note the back side of this case retains its original tin-lithograhed advertising, usually missing on most cases! This 6-drawer size is one of the most popular configurations since they make perfect end tables to use beside chairs, sofas, or beds!
